Belfast Girls
A film
by
Malin Andersson
BELFAST GIRLS is a powerful story of two young women growing up in Belfast where so-called concrete “peace walls” are also mental walls, dividing one community from another. With insightful clarity, the filmmaker documents the lives of two women who live on
opposite sides of the walls – revealing how, in their daily struggles and triumphs, they have more in common with each other than they have differences.

I Had an Abortion
A film by
Gillian Aldrich and
Jennifer Baumgardner
In the US, 1.3 million women per year have abortions,
but the topic is still so stigmatized that it’s never discussed in
polite company. Powerful and fiercely honest, I HAD AN ABORTION
tackles this taboo, featuring 10 women who candidly describe their
abortion experience, with stories that span seven decades – from the
years before Roe v. Wade to the present day. Cutting across age,
race, class and religion, this film offers heartfelt stories that
personalize what has become a vicious and abstract debate.

I Was a Teenage Feminist
A film by
Therese Shechter
Why is it that young, independent, progressive women in today's society feel uncomfortable identifying with the F-word? Join filmmaker Therese Shechter as she takes a funny, moving and very personal journey into the heart of feminism. Armed with a video camera and an irreverent sense of humor, Shechter talks with feminist superstars, rowdy frat boys, liberated Cosmo girls and Radical Cheerleaders. Beginning as
a quest to find out whether feminism can still be a source of personal and political power, this film ultimately redefines the F-word for a new generation. More.

Leila Khaled: Hijacker
A film by
Lina Makboul
In 1969 Palestinian Leila Khaled made history by
becoming the first woman to hijack an airplane. As a Palestinian
child growing up in Sweden, filmmaker Lina Makboul admired Khaled
for her bold actions; as an adult, she began asking complex
questions about the legacy created by her childhood hero. This
fascinating documentary is at once a portrait of Khaled, an
exploration of the filmmaker’s own understanding of her Palestinian
identity, and a complex examination of the nebulous dichotomy
between "terrorist" and "freedom fighter."

They Call Me Muslim
A film
by
Diana Ferrero
In popular Western imagination, a Muslim woman in a veil – or hijab – is a symbol of Islamic oppression. In this provocative documentary, filmmaker Diana Ferrero portrays the struggle of two women – one in France and one in Iran – to express themselves freely.

Transnational
Tradeswomen
A film by
Vivian
Price
Investigating current and historical roles of women in the
construction industry worldwide, former construction worker Vivian
Price discovers that women in many parts of Asia have been doing
construction labor for centuries. But now, development and the
resulting mechanization are pushing them out of the industry. The
stories of women workers from Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore, Indian,
Pakistan, and Japan disturb the notion of “progress” that many
people hold, demonstrating that modernization, education and
technology don’t always result in gender equality and the
alleviation of poverty. More.

A Woman's Word
A film
by
Silvia G. Ponzoda
Beautiful and intimate, A WOMAN'S WORD depicts the life and writings
of three exceptional authors of the Arab word- Nawal Al Saadawi,
Hanan Al Shaykh, and Janata Bennuna. In her own way, each writer
struggles as an Arab woman in a society that often wants to shut
down her powerful voice. Conveying the intense drive of these women
to write as a way to make sense of the world, to battle their sense
of alienation or to express their political dissent, this
documentary shatters the clichéd image of the oppressed and helpless
Arab woman too often portrayed in the media.
